Les Bains des Docks Aquatic Centre is an emblematic building in Le Havre. It is the brainchild of architect Jean Nouvel and was built between 2004-2008. Its clear and calming design is embedded in its geometry featuring inset rectangular boxes that provide a special character inside and outside. The architecture is largely colour neutral, where the water and the bodies within it provide much of the organic character. The exception is a bright and vivid playroom for children on the side of the indoor section of the facility.
The Aquatic Centre is made up of three main units: an outdoor heated sports pool of fifty meters by twenty-one, an indoor/outdoor fun pool and a balneotherapy centre. Other beaches and two hanging pools are located upstairs and are accessible from the leisure swimming pool. An internal link connects all these pools for visitors with an ad hoc pass.
The cardio-training centre, the administration with independent access, and the cafeteria with free access, are also located upstairs and directly connected to the hall. Large skylights and façade windows bring in natural light throughout.
The renovation of the complex lasted just over a year and included new features, improvement of certain equipment, replacement of glass roofs and tiles, painting, modernisation of the lockers and enhancement of the air treatment within the balneotherapy areas. The biggest challenge of swimming pool environments is coping with the excessive humidity.
An ideal solution preventing corrosion
Modular Skylights from VELUX Commercial meet the high demands of swimming pool areas. It is a tested solution with proven quality and functionality, for installation in such environments. The composite material under the exposed lacquer of Modular Skylights is non-corrosive, thus the material does not need additional protective coating, which also makes the installation process easier. Furthermore, we specially designed a vapour barrier connection strip, vapour barrier adhesive and inner ridge cover to effectively prevent condensation.
Bringing life in the clear, rectangular design
More than 300 modules in different sizes were installed on the roof in different parts of Les Bains des Docks complex replacing the old skylights. Modular Skylights are made-to-measure; thus , they are ideal for such renovation projects. The skylights ensure the complete watertight sealing of the roof and create a stunning daylight design. Modular Skylights have a sleek, clear look and enable the penetration of plenty of natural light. When the light and the playfulness of the water surface are reflected on the robust white walls, the whole atmosphere changes and gets an organic character.
