A historic building gets new life with natural light

Denmark's oldest public swimming pool, Øbro-Hallen, is located in Østerbro in Copenhagen and was built in the early 1900s. The swimming pool has great cultural and historical significance and is known for its unique architecture. A renovation project was initiated after serious problems with water ingress had been identified and a condition report showed that the building envelope and concrete structures were worn out. The aim of the project was to modernise the facilities while preserving the historical values of the building.

A significant part of the renovation included upgrading the skylight solutions. The skylight consists of glass panels and a laylight, which in the evening is supplemented by LED tubes during the dark winter months. This ensures optimal utilisation of daylight and reduces the need for artificial lighting, contributing to the building's sustainability requirements.

Sustainable design

Great Emphasis was placed on sustainability during the execution of the renovation. . As many of the existing materials as possible were reused, including the steel frame system and the building superstructure. . New elements were only added where absolutely necessary. Improved insulation reduced thermal loss and heat radiation, resulting in significant energy savings equivalent to 47,539 KWh and CO2 savings of (kg) 4,705.

Collaboration and schedule

The project was carried out in close collaboration with VELUX Commercial's project consultants, a main contractor and a master carpenter. The collaboration was characterised by good communication and flexibility, which ensured that the project was completed efficiently. The renovation took 10 months and was finished without delays, with all deliveries on time.

Results and user experience

The renovation project was received with great enthusiasm by the local population in Østerbro. The project  successfully combined the preservation of the building's historical elements with modern solutions. It has not only given the swimming pool a new lease of life, but also ensured that it will remain an important cultural and social centre for many years to come.
