The new library design combines modern architecture with ecology, offering a space for education, relaxation and work in harmony with the environment
The project for a new green library is an innovative model of sustainable construction and circular economy. Located on Kłosowa Street in Warsaw's Bialoleka district, the modern 724 m² library was built in just six months using prefabricated timber module technology. The library offers a two-storey space designed to meet the diverse needs of its users. The ground floor houses a modern media library, a multifunctional room and a coworking space, while the first floor houses a children's lending library, offices and social facilities. The design is distinguished by a perfect harmony of aesthetics, functionality and ecology.
The building's construction is dominated by wood — a natural, ecological material that has allowed the complete elimination of chemical impregnations. The interiors were finished using renewable and recycled materials, such as reclaimed linoleum and carefully refurbished furniture. An innovative heating system was integrated with photovoltaic panels, providing an additional source of renewable energy and emphasising the pro-environmental nature of the development. In order to provide as much daylight as possible, the building uses modular skylights from VELUX Commercial — a single light band made up of 12 modular skylights, including 2 ventilation modules. Located in the children's lending area, the skylights provide a constant supply of fresh air and plenty of natural daylight, creating ideal conditions for reading, playing and relaxing for the youngest users.
The uniqueness of the project has been recognised with numerous awards, including the Architecture Award of the Mayor of the City of Warsaw 2024 for public architecture and accessibility. The library was also the first building in the city to be awarded the Warsaw Green Building Standard Certificate and a distinction in the Polish Green Building Council (PLGBC) Award 2023, underlining its status as an exemplary green building. Its friendly, open interiors with space for work and relaxation and a flexible multi-purpose room allow for a wide variety of activities, from meetings and workshops to individual work and relaxation.
