With its unique architecture centred around a spacious atrium, the school embodies the principles of community spirit

Lysning School is more than just a school; it's a vibrant community hub in Overlund, Viborg, Denmark. Designed to foster interaction and learning, the building serves students, athletes, and the broader community throughout the day and evening. Its unique architecture, centred around a spacious atrium, creates a dynamic and inspiring learning environment.

Architecture and the atrium

Sustainable design is pivotal to this building; timber was used as the primary material, which gives a special character to the façade and to the interior. The heart of Lysning School is its impressive atrium, a "clearing" (Lysning in Danish) that connects the three stories. The innovative half-story design encourages interaction and a sense of community, while the central staircase functions as an amphitheatre for teaching and gatherings. This open design maximizes natural light and – complemented with the timber structure – creates a welcoming and friendly atmosphere.

Illumination and the role of skylights

The central spaces of the building are illuminated with elegant Step Ridgelight solutions. These innovative skylights, made up of fixed as well as motorized smoke venting modules, provide ample daylight and fresh air throughout the building. Light from the skylights brings a playful and dynamic flow to the atrium.

Natural light is essential for fostering a healthy and inspiring learning environment. Several studies have shown that daylight is not only good for children’s overall health and wellbeing, but that it can also significantly improve academic performance. You can read more about schools and daylighting in our blog.

The use of Modular Skylights aligns with the school's commitment to sustainability, minimizing its environmental impact. These skylights provide excellent insulation and thermal stability, positively influencing the building’s energy efficiency. Modular Skylights are able to achieve one of the lowest overall U-values for frame and glazing assembly in the skylight market.

Lysning School is more than just a place of learning; it is a beacon of sustainability and community spirit in Overlund, Viborg. The integration of VELUX Commercial's skylight solution has played a crucial role in bringing light and life to this exceptional educational facility.
