New school building, Leisniger Strasse, Dresden

Movement and communication on the ground floor, silence and concentration on the upper floor – supported by an open atrium with eyecatching Longlights

In August 2018, a new school building flooded with light was opened for 224 primary school children. One year later, it was integrated in the neighbouring school "A.S. Makarenko". The compact solitary building presents itself as a simple cuboid with coloured accents. Inside, a calm and friendly atmosphere is created by plenty of daylight as well as defined colours and materials.

The centre of the building is a light-flooded atrium with a single-flight steel staircase. This is illuminated by a glass roof, which consists of four rows of VELUX Modular Skylights installed as a Longlight 5-30° with five individual modules each.

A wooden slat wall creates spatial unity across the floors. The daylight entering from above becomes a design element through the shadows cast by the slats. The curved cladding of the supporting structure between the VELUX Modular Skylights installed as Longlight rows picks up on the motif of the wooden fittings and highlights the roof structure.

The building is very compact. Nevertheless, the generous amount of light from the VELUX Modular Skylights Longlights makes it appear bright and spacious.

Installed efficiently, controlled sustainably

A wooden sub-construction with appropriate insulation was installed on the concrete upstand. A steel framework made of double-T beams was placed in the ceiling hole. This forms the support for the Longlights and serves as a walk-on bridge for maintenance and cleaning work. The construction company was supported by an expert VELUX employee for installation of the VELUX Modular Skylights.

Every second skylight module can be opened and is used for smoke evacuation and for cooling the building through the chimney effect. Internal sunscreening and opening are controlled automatically via a connected weather station.
