Factors to consider when choosing a system
Building size and complexity
For few skylights in the same area, VELUX io-homecontrol® is typically sufficient. Multiple skylights across different, large roof areas generally benefit from Open System integration with building management systems.
User requirements
Buildings with few regular occupants often benefit from io-homecontrol®'s multiple operator capability. Public buildings with many different users generally require the centralized control offered by Open System.
Building function
If smoke ventilation is required or integration with building management systems is needed, Open System must be used.
Installation context
- New builds: Allows early planning of cable routes and systems.
- Renovation projects: The wireless nature of io-homecontrol® may be preferable when running new cables is challenging.
Combined solutions
For greater flexibility, it's possible to combine both systems:
- Actuators in Open System with roller blinds in io-homecontrol®
- Smoke ventilation in Open System with comfort controls in io-homecontrol®
- Please note: Installing roller blinds in smoke venting modules requires project-specific approval from the local fire authorities.
This approach allows for centralized control of critical functions while maintaining local control of comfort features.
Practical considerations
Rain and wind detection
Both systems can incorporate sensors for weather-dependent operation.
Signal range and building materials
When using io-homecontrol®, consider that:
- Brick and concrete reduce signals by 20-40%
- Wood and plaster walls reduce signals by 5-20%
- Reinforced concrete reduces signals by 40-90%
- Metal enclosures reduce signals by 90-100%
For larger installations, signal repeaters (KLF 200) can be strategically placed to extend the range of up to 30 meters in any direction.
